Description
Mary Ann Grosvenor was born in Dudley, England in 1844 but moved to the United States when she was one-year-old. The family eventually settled in the shoreline community of Guilford, Connecticut. In 1865, the year she wrote her diary, she seems to have spent some of her time as a live-in domestic helper for a pair of families both in Guilford and the adjoining town of Madison.
Her diary traces the life of a twenty-one-year-old girl in a small town at the end of the Civil War. Besides mentioning everyday occurrences such as baking, the changing weather, the death of townspeople, or church-related activities, she comments on Abraham Lincoln's death and the events that took place in Guilford at that moment, and the death of her brother Sam who served in the war.
